What are the benefits?
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Geelong is of greatest assistance to young people aged 12-18 years, from the Northern / Eastern suburbs of Geelong, who are in need of additional adult support and may be disengaged from education or training. 

There is considerable evidence of the benefits to vulnerable young people who participate in a long term mentoring program.
The establishment of a positive and sustainable friendship may lead to the following types of outcomes and benefits over time:

  • Improved school attendance (52% less likely to skip school)
  • Lower rates of youth  offending
  • Reduced rates of risk taking behaviours (46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 27% less likely to begin using alcohol)
  • Increased sense of competence and belonging
  • Increased self-esteem and confidence
  • Improvements in relationships with family members
  • Development of new skills
  • Increased social networks and support with peers
  • Greater capacity to cope effectively in day to day life
  • Reduced risk of harm to self and others
